John owned a large stock farm containing 250 acres, near Mashapauge, in Providence, which he sold in 1703, "reserving forever two poles square where several graves are contained about thirty rods west of the house." This reference is doubtless to the graves of his wife and son, Daniel, both of whom were then dead, and whose graves in 1894 could be found west of the railroad track nearly opposite the foot of Earl street, among a small clump of trees. His wife's grave can be identified by a head-stone marked simply "E. S., 1699." John Sayles afterwards opened a hotel, his license "to keep a publick house and sell liquor" being dated August 14, 1710. In 1694 and again in 1706, he was appointed deputy. He died at Providence, August 2, 1727 [Thayer and Burton Ancestry].
New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Third Series, Volume IV :
John Sayles, son of John Sayles, was born August 17, 1654, in Providence, Rhode Island, and died August 2, 1727. He was admitted a freeman, May 3, 1681, and was on the grand jury in 1688. Among his grants of land was 35 acres "which said land he had of his grandfather, Mr. Roger Williams." In those days the ministers were designated by "Mr." not "Rev."
He was deputy to the general assembly from 1694 until 1706. He kept an inn, and August 14, 1710, was licensed to sell liquor to his guests. His will was dated September 14, 1726, and proved August 21, 1727.
The gravestones erected on the graves of John Sayles, his wife Elizabeth and son Daniel are still to be seen in the old graveyard west of the railroad track, nearly opposite the foot of Earl street. He married Elizabeth Olney, born January 3, 1666, daughter of Thomas Olney. She died November 2, 1699. Children: Mary, born May 30, 1689; John, January 13, 1692; Richard, mentioned below; Daniel, December 13, 1697, died February 3, 1698; Thomas.
