From "Old Greenock from the earliest times to the early part of the nineteenth" ... By George Williamson: "In 1565 'Greenock's Ancestor' married his cousin Jean, daughter of John Cunninghame, of Glengarnock, by whom he had a large family-five sons and five daughters. He died in 1593. His eldest son, Alexander, predeceased his father without issue, and James, the second son, succeeded him. It was through Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of 'Greenock's Ancestor,' who married Hugh Montgomerie, of Braidstane, or Broadstone, in Ayrshire, that that estate was acquired by the Greenock family, who are still proprietors of it."

Notes

From Page 276 of Old Greenock from the Earliest Times to the Early Part of the Nineteenth ...By George Williamson

family pedigree already cited bears that John Schaw by his marriage with Jean Cunninghame had five sons and five daughters—" 1st, Alexander, who predeceased his father without issue; 2nd, James, who succeeded; 3rd, William, of Spangow; 4th, Patrick of Kelsoeland; 5th, Robert, ancestor of the Schaws of Ganoway, in Ireland. The daughters were 1st, Elizabeth, who married Hugh Montgomery [or Montgomerie] of Braidstone, who was created Viscount of Ardes in Ireland in 1622, and afterwards disponed Braidstone to his nephew John Shaw; 2nd, Isobel, who married John Lindsay of the Dunrod family; 3rd, Marion, who married Campbell of Doucathall [Dovecoathall]; 4th, Christian, who married Patrick Montgomery of Blackhouse in Scotland, and Craigbouie in Ireland; 5th, Giles, who married James Crawford of Flattertoun." This enumeration of the family has been taken from Craufurd's "History of Renfrewshire" and Nisbet's MS. " Genealogical History " in the Advocates' Library.

Meanwhile Alexander and Elizabeth had a son John, probably around 1540, who became Laird of Greenock and married his cousin Jean Cunningham of Glengarnock. His descendants built a harbour at Greenock which is 22 miles west of Glasgow on the Clyde. At first they tried to get financial assistance from the king but when that was not forthcoming they financed it themselves and became enormously wealthy when Greenock went on to become the fourth busiest port in the United Kingdom by the start of the 19th Century. (It’s interesting to notice that during the same period my Chichester relatives were across the Irish Sea transforming Belfast from a tiny village to the busiest port in Ireland.) In time, the Schaws of Greenock added the lands of East Greenock and Sauchie to their estates.
The family of John, the original Laird of Greenock, is described in Crawfurd’s A General History of the Shire of Renfrew (1818) (but he gives the wrong name for the “author of that branch of the Shaws of Ganoway in Ireland”. He was John, not Robert.) John the 1st Laird died around 1594 and the wardship of his children was granted to Hugh Montgomery, 6th Laird of Braidstane, who had married John’s daughter Elizabeth in 1587. Hugh found Montgomery spouses for three of the children (the heir James, second son Patrick and daughter Christian) and several of the Schaws joined him in Ireland where he was responsible, along with James Hamilton, for the Plantation of Down. He was created Viscount Montgomery of the Great Ards.
