About John Turberville

John Turberville

  • Birth: Sep. 14, 1737 Hague Westmoreland County Virginia, USA
  • Death: Jul. 10, 1799 Hague Westmoreland County Virginia, USA

Husband of Martha (Corbin)Turberville (daughter of Hon. Col. John Corbin and Lettice (Lee) Corbin.) John, born at Hickory Hill to Maj. George Turberville and Martha (Lee) Turberville, was a Revolutionary War patriot having been named to the Committee of Safety from Westmoreland County along with his brother, George Richard Turberville on Jan. 31, 1775. John was given Woodberry Hill in Stafford County and Hickory Hill prior to his father's death and he resided at Hickory Hill. John's will requests that he be buried in the garden next to his wife, Martha. This stipulation of his burial was necessary as he had married, after the 1792 death of Martha, Anne Ballentine with whom he had no children and he desired burial next to the mother of his 10 children. Hickory Hill passed to his grandaughter, Martha Felicia Turberville, (who married Maj. Robert Beale) daughter of his son, Maj. George Lee Turberville, his son, George, having predeceased him. Woodberry passed to his daughter Martha Corbin Turberville who later married Dr. Mottrom Ball, M. D. His daughter, Rebecca Lee Turberville, died at age 13 and is buried with her parents at Hickory Hill. It took a court action to divide his property even though he had left a will!
