About John "Waco" Brown

John (Waco) Brown, early Texas settler, was born in Kentucky on September 9, 1796. He married Nancy Ann Howell in Missouri in 1820 and came to Texas with his brother, Henry S. Brown, in December 1824. He was captured by the Waco Indians in 1825 and held prisoner for more than a year, thereby acquiring his sobriquet. He brought his wife and two sons from Missouri in 1829 and settled at San Felipe. In April 1833 he furnished supplies for José de las Piedras to move his troops west to Mexico. Brown was a legal client of William B. Travis in San Felipe shortly before his death in 1833. He is sometimes confused with another John Brown, one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colonists.
