Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Witt-534

John Witt was born about 1710 in Charles City County, Virginia Colony. He was the son of William Witt and an unconfirmed mother often shown as Elizabeth Mary Daux based on a 1927 Huguenot fallacy. John passed away in February 1782 in Amherst County, Virginia.

In 1738 William Witt and sons, including John, moved about 40 miles west of his brothers, purchasing land in St. Anne's Parish on the Rivanna River and Ballenger's Creek in Goochland County (became Albemarle County in 1738 and Fluvanna County in 1777).[1]

John Witt married Lucy (unproven maiden name of Littlebury) about 1738 probably in Goochland County, Virginia (became Albemarle County in 1744). John's wife was not Elizabeth. The John Witt who was married to Elizabeth was this John's cousin, son of John Witt II and Ann Rogers.

Last Will & Testament

John bequeaths 10 shillings to be divided equally among his "seven first sons born of my wife Lucy..." A maintenance income is to be paid to wife Lucy and daughter Lucy from his estate. Then "... all land and personal estate goods and chattles I dye possessed with..." to son William Witt. If William dies without heirs, the estate is to be divided equally among sons Littleberry, George and Elisha Witt. John Witt, George Witt and Littleberry Witt are appointed executors; witnesses are Abner Witt, David Witt and William Witt.

From this will we may infer nine children: daughter Lucy and eight sons ("seven first sons" and William). Four sons are named specifically: William, Littleberry, George, and Elisha. Since John Witt is one of the appointed executors, we may assume he is a son. Witnesses Abner, David and William Witt may be John's brothers, but are probably sons.

So we have seven sons: Abner, David, Littleberry, John, George, Elisha, and William. The eighth son is not named. Most lists include Charles Witt as the eighth son.
