Birth: 1739 New Brunswick Middlesex County New Jersey, USA Death: May 12, 1812 Jefferson County Indiana, USA
John was the son of Aaron Van Cleave and Rachel Schenck. With his siblings and Boone in-laws John pioneered Kentucky in the 1770's. His first wife, Mary (Shepherd) Van Cleave was killed during the Long Run Massacre on September 13, 1781, in (then) Jefferson County, Kentucky.
John served in the Jefferson County, Kentucky Territorial Militia, District of Virginia, during the Revolutionary War.
John married, circa summer 1782, at the Low Dutch Station, in old Lincoln Co., Kentucky Territory, Rachel (Demaree)(Ryker), the widow of Gerardus Ryker. Gerardus was killed by the Indians two days after the Long Run Massacre during a failed rescue attempt, referred to as Floyd's Defeat. Rachel was born November 19, 1743, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Samuel Demaree (Demarest) and Lea Demarest (cousins). Rachel died circa 1818 in Madison Township, Jefferson County, Indiana. Both John and Rachel had 7 children each from their previous marriages. Between them they produced two children, Peter and David (named for her Demarest grandfathers).
John's headstone has the date of the probate of his will instead of his actual death date. And, his surname is misspelled. All errors committed by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery Administration, after I requested a military headstone to be placed for John. His headstone was placed by Van Cleave and Ryker family members on July 2, 2008.
