Biography

Jonas Austen was baptized in Staplehurst, Kent, England on December 3, 1598, a son of Jarvis/Gervis Austen and Mary (Bassock).[1][2]

Marriages

Jonas married twice.

He married on 22 January 1626/7 in Tenterden, Kent, England, as his first, to Constance (Unknown) Robinson (widow of William Robinson).[1] Constance and William had a daughter, Lydia Robinson, who immigrated with Jonas and her mother.[1]

He married on 4 December 1667 at Taunton, Plymouth Colony (later Massachusetts), as his second, to Frances (Unknown) Hill (widow of John Hill of Dorchester).[1] Jonas and Frances had no children together. She died at Dorchester on 18 Nov 1676.[1]

Children

Jonas and Constance had three children:[1]

  1. Mary Austin, bpt in Tenterden, Kent, England on August 24, 1628 and buried on December 18, 1629.
  2. Jonas (Jonah) Austin, bpt in Tenterden February 28, 1629/30. Came to America with his parents in 1635. Died before November 22, 1676.
  3. Mary Austin, bpt 5 Aug 1632 in Tenterden. Came to America with parents, but no further record.[1]

Immigration

The passenger list of the ship Hercules, which sailed from Sandwich, England to Massachusetts in 1634 lists: "JONAS AUSTEN of Tenterden and CONSTANCE his wife Four children."[3]

If there were four children on board with the Austins, one does not seem to be recorded anywhere. The third was Lydia Robinson, the daughter of Constance by her first husband.[1]

The family first settled at Cambridge, then by 1636 removed to Hingham, and by 1651 to Taunton.[1]

Associations

No relationship has been found between Constance or Jonas with Nathaniel Tilden, who was also from Tenterden, Kent, and witnessed the will of William Robinson.[1] Nathaniel also witnessed the Willyam Austen will proved 20 June 1617.[4] Nathaniel and Jonas certainly knew each other.[1] The Tilden family and others from Staplehurst sailed aboard the Hercules.

Jonas Austen's aunt Joan/Joane/Johan Austin married Henry Harris in Staplehurst.

Henry Harris and Johan (Joane) Austin, yonge ffolke married 25 October 1579.[4] Another passenger aboard the Hercules was Parnell Harris, possibly the granddaughter of Henry Harris and Joan (Austin).[4]

Death and Legacy

Jonas died in Taunton, Massachusetts on July 30, 1683.[1]
