He died, at the age of 80, on August 3, 1867, in Fayette County, Alabama. He is buried at the Spring Hill Cemetery, Bluff, Fayette County, Alabama.[1]

An early pioneer family of Fayette County is the McCLUNG family. They first settled in this county two or three miles from the present community of Bluff.

The McCLUNG's are of Scotch descent. The earliest record of any McCLUNGs is found in Galloway, Scotland. It was there, around 1690, three McCLUNG brothers left because of religious persecution.

These brothers went to the providence of Ulster in Ireland. By 1890, there were 313 McCLUNG households in Ulster.

The first McCLUNG to emigrate to America was a Thomas McCLUNG who settled in Christiana, Penn. He was from Moate in the county of Meath in Ireland. His arrival in America was in 1729.

Georgia land (RootsWeb):
The Georgia Land Lotteries were probably a wonderful way for our ancestors to acquire land, but they are a nightmare for the historian. Where one can usually count on families traveling by groups to new locations, the lotteries sent them to the four quarters. We find that our men, Jonas, Reuben, and Hiram had ended up in the adjoining county of Gwinnett. They registered in Gwinnett in the lottery of 1827. Hiram won land in Dist. 16, Sec. 2 of Muscogee Co.; Jonas won land in Dist. 9, Sec. 5 of Carroll County; Reuben won land in Dist. 6, Sec. 1 of Lee County. We do not know the disposition of these lands at this time. Sewell was still in Gwinnett Co. by 1850 so perhaps, he didn't win a draw. Hiram and William W.won draws in the 1832 Gold Lottery

Paulding County Genealogical Society

The McClung Family. Article from Dallas New Era, November 1976.

The earliest record of the McClung family locates them in Galloway, Scotland. The McClung are of the highland origin. Three brothers, James, John and Robert left Scotland because of religious persecution and settled in Ireland about 1690. They were Presbyterian. The McClungs today are said to be "Scotch Irish".

John McClung, son of James McClung, settled in America in 1731. James and the rest of the family joined him in Pennsylvania in 1740. At that time the family consisted of eight members; James (The father), John, William, Hugh, Charles, Matthew, Mary and Isabella.

About 1742, James, William and Hugh emigrated to the "Borden Grant", Augusta County, near Timber Ridge, Virginia.

The Georgia family of McClungs are directly descended from the Virginia family. The earliest record of the Georgia McClungs were that there were eight children as follows: Sewell, John, Horam [Hiram], Reuben, James, Isaac, Sallie and Annie.

Reuben was born in Ireland in 1777, and lived with his father James in Virginia, where he married Polly Williamson and moved to Georgia. They lived several years in Gwinnett County until western Georgia opened for settlement. They received a land grant in the Brownsville area of Campbell County, now Paulding County, near Sweetwater Creek. Reuben donated land and help found Sweetwater Baptist Church near Brownsville. Reuben and Polly had ten children.

JOHN McCLUNG
GA

The father of some of the Georgia families was married to Elizabeth. It is possible that John and Elizabeth were parents of Reuben, Jonas, Drucilla, Hiram and Sewell McClung. This John was in Jackson County where he probably died about 1812. There was a strip of land in Jackson that became a part of Hall County. Their home was probably located there as after the formation of Hall, they are found in Hall records as well as Jackson.

[Index to the Headright and Bounty Grants in Georgia, 1856-1909. Georgia Genealogical Reprints, 1970]. From this reference is the listing of the heirs of John McClung receiving 100 acres in Jackson County in 1812. (Grant Book I-5, p. 145)[same reference]. The original records should show the names of the heirs.
[Document can be viewed at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS42-FQQ6-Q?view=i...]

Since this places his heirs in Jackson Co., we can see from early Jackson County marriages that these men were married there:

1808 - Jonas to Rebecca Reed
1826 - Reuben to Polly Williamson
1828 - Sewel to Elizabeth Phillips

Georgia Tax Digests show a John McClung in 1800 in Oglethorp county, Ellis District. (Oglethorp borders Wilkes and Greene counties. Then in 1804 John is in Jackson Co., Cockran District. He does not show up in the 1809-11 listings.

We find John selling land to Reuben McClung in Greene Co. in 1796. If the birthdate from the 1850 census is correct, that would make him 11 years old. We wonder why John was leaving this land to his son who could not have been legally old enough to do this transaction. Did he know he was ill?

The next record we have of John is a listing of the first members of Walnut Fork Church met at the home of Joseph Thompson on May 29, 1802 to form a constitution. The following list of members were transcribed from the original church records to the best of our ability (only listing McClungs and relatives):
This is in the Jackson Co. Historical Society News October 1999.

John McClung
