* Note: Joseph Albrighton was born in Staffordshire County, England around 1633 and came to York County, Virginia prior to 1650. He was an adult in York County by 1657 when he was a witness to a document whereby Anne Barnhouse gave freedom to a negro man named Mikill Gower, who had been owned by her brother , Xopher Stafford, deceased. This Document was dated October 25, 1657. Anne Barnhouse mentioned that the slave was owned by her uncle Robert Stafford, before her brother owned him. Joseph Albrighton was literate for he signed the document with his name and did not make a mark. Joseph Albrighton was not named as a son in the will of Francis Albrighton but is believed to be a nephew of Francis who also arrived in York County, Virginia prior to or around 1650. The Staffords mentioned above were closely connected to the Albrighton-Albritton family as James Albritton, the great grandson of Joseph, purchased a tract of land in Beaufort County, North Carolina from William Stafford. This would indicate strong ties between the families. Joseph Albrighton is believed to have died around 1670 in York County. The name of his wife is unknown. Ralphe Albritton of York County, Virginia is believed to be his son. It is not known if there were other children. Reference: O'Duvall, op.cit., page 18.
