The Bahamas DNA Project records show that Joseph Alexander Knowles was born December 2, 1782 at The Crossing, Long Island, The Bahamas. He was the son of James Knowles and Hannah Campbell.
Around 1813, Joseph married Eleanor Newman, daughter of Arthur Newman and an unknown wife (previously believed to be Roxanna Remington or Elizabeth McKenzie). Together, they had three children:
- James Alexander Knowles, b. November 10, 1812 at the Crossing, Long Island
- Joseph Robert Knowles (known as Joseph Jr.), b. March 13, 1814 on Long Island
- Elizabeth (or Isabella) Jane Knowles Darville, b. February 19, 1818 on Long Island
Joseph is believed to have died sometime between 1825 and 1850. Eleanor died on June 28, 1878 or 1879 on Long Island.
