Biography

This profile is part of the Babcock Name Study.
Joseph Babcock, son of James Babcock and his second wife, Elizabeth March, was born at Westerly, Rhode Island or Stonington, Connecticut in 1670. He settled in North Stonington, where he died in 1762. Joseph's farm was in or near the present village of Milltown, Connecticut. His father, James Babcock, bequeathed to Joseph all his housing and lands, to take possession when he attained the age of twenty one years.

Joseph married first, 3 Apr 1696, Dorothy Key who died 14 Dec 1727. Dorothy was admitted to the Stonington church 11 May 1707[1] and was recommended to membership in the North Stonington church 9 Apr 1727.

Joseph married second, 1 Jan 1729, Mrs. Hannah (Bill) Coates, probable widow of William Coates of Stonington, to whom she was married 9 Jun 1714, and by whom she had four children.

On 29 Mar 1741, Joseph Babcock was baptized and admitted to the North Stonington Congregational Church (N. Ston. Church records).

The will of Joseph Babcock, dated 13 Oct 1760, admitted to probate 13 Apr 1762, recorded in office of county clerk in New London, Connecticut, book H, pp. 104-6, mentions "well-beloved wife Hannah Babcock, daughters Dorothy Jones and Abigail Billings, my only son John Babcock yet surviving, granddaughter Mary Babcock, dau. of my son Joseph Babcock, deceased." Nominates and appoints son, John Babcock, with his mother to administer the estate.
