About Joseph Beardsley

A History of the Old Town of Stratford and the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut :

4. Joseph, son of William, 1st, and Mary Beardsley, m. Abigail , probably of Long Island. He complied so far as to secure the property, which he exchanged, July 31, 1684, he being then of Brookhaven. L. I., with Andrew Gibb—"all his possessions in Stratford for Mr. Gibb's homestead in Brookhaven."*

He returned to Stratford, where he died in 1712, aged 77, the inventory of his estate being taken May 29, 1712, and amounting to British Pouds -782-07-6.

Very few records have been found about him. He apparently obeyed his father's wishes and abandoned the sea, thereby claiming his inheritance.

The name of Joseph Beardsley is found in the "List of Inhabitants of Stratford, 1668." He also appears on the tax list for the "White Hills Purchase" in 1671.

His estate was inventoried at £782, 7 shillings.

Henry Case was born in 1630 in Leicestershire, England. Henry immigrated to America before 1658 settling in Southold, Long Island, New York. He was married to Martha Corwin on December 15, 1658 in Southold, Long Island, New York. Henry and Martha had Henry, Theophilus and Hannah. Henry's occupation was probably that of a shoemaker (cordwainer). Henry died in 1664 in Southold, Long Island, New York.

English Puritans from New Haven Colony in Connecticut settled in Southold on October 21, 1640. Under the leadership of the Reverend John Youngs, with Peter Hallock, the settlement consisted of the families of Barnabas Horton, John Budd, John Conklin, William Wells, John Tuthill, Thomas Mapes, Richard Terry, Matthias Corwin, Robert Akerly, Zachariah Corey and Isaac Arnold. They had purchased the land in the summer of 1640 from the group of Lenape who lived in the territory they called Corchaug. Settlers spelled the Indian name of what became Southold as Yennicott. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southold_%28town%29,_New_York
