Biography ===Very little is known about Ruth Beardsley. She was mentioned in the distribution of her brother John’s estate. On October 31, 1719, Joseph Smith of Jamaica, Long, Island, conveyed to Nathan Beardslee of Stratford, Connecticut, ‘Land set to my mother, Mrs. Ruth Smith, in thedistribution of the estate of Capt. John Beardsley.’ [Holt]

By 1668, she is said to have married Joseph Smith of Jamaica, Long Island, New York. Ruth was treated on 23 March 1668/9 by Dr. John Winthrop, Jr. for "hysterical fits."<ref name="GMA-B">Anderson, Robert C., (1995) "William Beardsley," Featured name. Great Migration 1634-1635, A-B. NEHGS AmericanAncestors (Volume 1, A-B, Page 226).</ref>

Another way to view the record is that after Ruth (Beardsley)'s death,Joseph Smith, Sr. married as his 2nd, to Mary Unknown and had the twodaughters, Ruth and Mary, listed above. Either way, Ruth (Beardsley)was the mother of only one child, Joseph Smith, Jr.<ref name="TAG25"/>
