About Joseph Emery Carper, (CSA)

Born to Virginia Jane (née SHUMATE) and Joseph CARPER, Sr.

He first married Frances Elizabeth HUNT at Grandview on 2 June 1875.

The family migrated to Chaves County, New Mexico in the mid-1890s. Some of Joseph's extended family, brothers and cousins (and their children), also migrated to southeastern New Mexico (Chaves and Eddy counties). Part of the family would abandoned ranching during the 1910s and go into the booming oil business, eventually forming Carper Drilling Company. Another group would move on to northeastern Oregon, in the mountains of the Wallowas.

Frances became ill after giving birth to Robert Perry CARPER (b.25 JUL 1899) and died less than a month later.

He second married Lucy Mary HUTCHINSON in Danville,​ Virginia on 16 May 1901.

Joseph and Lucy would later migrate to the Uvalde area.

Joseph was the father of at least 13 children (9 with Frances and 4 with Lucy).
