- Some of the children of Daniel Shumate, III and Millie became quite well known in Raleigh County, WV.
- Hardin's daughter, Jane, married Joseph Carper and settled near Grandview. He was a famous gunsmith, developing the Carper Rifle.
- Daniel Shumate IV married Elizabeth (Betsy) Ellison. One of their children, Daniel Shumate, V, married Narcissa Burgess and moved to Trap Hill in Raleigh County and Beckley, W. Va.
- Daniel, V, was one of the most outstanding Raleigh Countians to give his life for the South. He was the first County Clerk and one of the best educated citizens.
- During the Civil War Daniel, V, and his brother Newton were arrested as "citizen prisoners" and taken by Union soldiers to Camp Chase Military Prison at Columbus, Ohio. Daniel died there and Newton, though badly weakened and sick, was released after the war.
- Another child of Daniel and Betsy was Tollison Shumate who married Nancy Massey. This Tollison was on the Raleigh County Court and was a pioneer school teacher.
