Joseph Krueger, Sr.

Joseph (Kruger) Krueger was born on 13 May 1846 in Stettin, West Prussia, Germany. After WWII Stettin was given to Poland by the Geneva Convention dealing with territorial redistribution. City was renamed by the polish government to Szczecin, Zachodniopomorskie, Poland.

Joseph was a farmer and during the Prussian wars he was called into battle first as a Private in the German Kaiser Infantry. The next year he was a SGT in two short wars. Two years later he was promoted to Captain of the Infantry, Kaiser Army and as a Company Commander saw serious military action, to the point of loss of most of his men, equipment and horses. He was wounded and unable to work for several years.

In 1873 at Deutsch-Kron, West Prussia he married Rosalia Krenz. A year later a son(Johnn)was born unto them in April 1874. His mother-in-law (Katherine (Goltz) Krenz died. Soon after that, Joseph, Wife Rosalia, Son John, Father-In-Law Jakob Krenz and Rosalia's sister Appolania departed Germany on the SS Neckar for Amerika. They arrived at The Battery, which in 1892 became Ellis Island. From New York City they traveled directly to Winsted, Minnesota and homesteaded on a 160 acre farm. In 1901 they purchased a 320 acre farm in Wakefield Town Ship, Stearns County, Minnesota. The farm was 2 miles south of Cold Spring, Minnesota.

His obituary in the Cold Spring Record, St. Cloud Pioneer (now St. Cloud Times) read: On Tuesday morning Joseph Krueger, Sr, Summoned early this morning. The people of this community were saddened Tuesday to learn of the death of Joseph Krueger, Sr., a well known pioneer of Central Minnesota. After a very short illness. He had been troubled with gall-stones. This and complications due to advanced age were the cause of his death. He was born in Westprizen, Germany on May 13, 1846. In 1873 he was united in marriage to Rosalia (Kranze) Krenz. The year following their marriage they immigrated to Americka. Eight children were born to this marriage, two died in infancy. Rosalia died in 1891. In May 1892 Mr. Krueger married Augusta (Kranz) Krenz and they had eight children. One died in infancy and one at a young age. All the surviving children were in attendance of the funeral. 29 years ago the family came here from Winsted and made their home on the farm near Old St. Nicholas. About twelve years ago Mr.and Mrs. Krueger retired from active farming and moved to Cold Spring. After several years, they moved to Chaska where they spent a number of years, later returning here, to again make their home in Cold Spring, Minnesota.

Mr. Krueger was a kind and unassuming man and had as a friend everyone who knew him. The funeral will take place here Friday morning with a Solemn Requiem High Mass at St. Boniface Catholic Church at 9. A.M. Interment will be in the family lot in St. Boniface cemetery...

Joseph and Rosella came to America with son John age 10 months in 1874 on a ship Neckar from Bremen Germany and South Hampton, England. They arrived in the port of New York on May 4 1874. Also on theship was Rosella's father Jacob Krenz at age 65 and sister Appolonia Krenz at age 24. Appolonia married a Whenoff. Also found these names on the ships list, Fredrick Krueger age 24, Wilhelmina Krueger age 19 and Sophie Krueger age 3. <p>When Joseph and Rosella arrived in New York they came directly to Minnesota and homesteaded on a farm about 3 miles southwest of Winsted Mn. Joseph farmed there until 1902 when he and Augusta homesteaded in Cold Spring Mn. <p>I found a Nicholas Krueger married to Caralina Liehfin on 01 30 1883 in Winsted church records. I believe he is Joseph Sr. brother and Caralina had a brother named Francisuis Liehfin who married Appolonia Krueger.
