About Joseph Bernard Krueger

Joseph Bernard Krueger could play the violin. In his youth he would play at local social gatherings. He would play the violin for his grandchildren in the evenings after all the farm activities had been completed for the day. He continued to play the violin until about age 89.

Katie and Joe bought 80 acres from his Dad, Joeseph Krueger Sr., who had 320 acres and continued to farm the 240 acreas that remained. Joseph Bernard and Catherine (Schreifels) Krueger built a farm out of the 80 acre purchase, and subsequently increased the farm size to 160 acres. Upon marriage they lived in a rented White farm house that had been built in 1884 for $80.00. Their rent was $2.00 per month. (The owner was a Mr. Kreir, who had farmed and lived in the home until he retired and move to a nearby town), Pearl Lake (Marty), Minnesota. After George was born, they moved to their farm house, that became their permanent farm home on the Joseph Bernard Krueger farm located 2 1/2 miles west of the rented home that had been the former post office and saloon, operated by Ellenbecker and Decker in the town of old St Nicholas, which consisted of the St. Nicolaus Church - also called Old St. Nicholas Church, (This church was built in 1866 and the Bishop from St. Cloud closed it in 1899 because he and area farmers wanted a church about every six or seven miles. Reason: Transportation by horse. This church was 2 and 1/2 miles from Cold Spring (St. Boniface) that opened about 1858, so a new wooded church was built in the current town called St. Nicholas, about 2 1/2 miles South from the old church. The new church was built in 1899 and burned down a few years later. Immediately a new Brick church was constructed and is still operating in 2013. The site of the old church still has a maintained Cemetery, and Chaple and is now called Assumption Chapel on 200th Street, Wakefield Town Ship, Stearns County, Minnesota. The church was just across the road from the Krueger farm house. Catherine (Schreifels) Krueger, planted flowers at the site, cleaned the chapel, washed and ironed the Alter Cloth and Joesph cut the grass, did maintenance for the chapel. When they moved to Cold Spring, George, Veronica (Fronnie) and children took care of the chapel and cemetery from 1944 until about 1970, when they moved to Cold Spring.) Where not for them the Chapel and grounds would have lay in neglect. The town had a church, saloon/post office and a blacksmith shop. The land is now plowed land on the Krueger farm. In 1926 they bought another 80 acre farm from the Schmitt estate which was one-half ( 1/2 Mile West from their farm home and just across County Highway #2 from the old District #17 school house. In the spring of 1944 they moved to Cold Spring where Joe worked for the Bellwood Lumber and Log Sawing Company. In the fall of 1945 they bought a home at 48 McKinley Avenue North in St Cloud, where they lived until 1972. The first few years they lived in St. Cloud, during the summer Joseph Bernard would work part time for a Pea Canning Company to help process the pea stocks to a separater, a separator machine shucked the pods and the peas were canned. They sold that home and moved to the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring on April 1, 1972.

Joseph Bernard Krueger and Catherine (Schreifels) Krueger were Married on November 23, 1909 in the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Cold Spring, Stearns County, Minnesota.
