Joseph Power was the youngest of seven brothers who served in the Revolutionary War. He lived near Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia.

NOTE: The genealogical record of his grandson, (American historian and the first custodian of the tomb of President Abraham Lincoln) John Carroll Power, was filed and accepted on March 19, 1890 by the Illinois Society of the Sons of American Revolution.

The records in the Pension Bureau, Washington D.C. show that in November 1780 Joseph Power was drafted for two months, but was not required to do any service other than to march to Fredericksburg, Virginia and to return home to await further orders. It must be noted, he was not quite seventeen at this time. In February 1781 he was drafted for three months, marched to Williamsburg, to Yorktown, back to Williamsburg and Jamestown, guarding places and watching the movements of the enemy.

In the latter part of August 1781 he enlisted for another three months, under Captain Augustus Elgin to serve in the battalion commanded by Major George West, marched to Yorktown, joined the main army, participated in the Siege of Yorktown and the capture of the British Army and its commander,Lord Cornwallis on October 19, 1781. Several of his older brothers served throughout the entire length of the war.

Joseph married a few years after the war and in 1793, with his wife, two sons and household goods on pack horses, with several other families crossed the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh. The descended the Ohio River on flatboats, landing at Limestone, now Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky, and then settled in the Mt. Gilead neighborhood of Fleming County, Kentucky.

Joseph and Sarah Taylor Power had two sons and one daughter; the 2nd son was Joshua Power who married Sally Seybold, and their daughter Sarah married Sally's brother Jasper Seybold.

Written by Christopher Power and shared with cousin Lyde Owens Hood in 1940s.
