Deacon Joseph Sanford was born at Portsmouth, Rhode Island, in mid-August of 1698, a son of Samuel Sanford and Susanna (Spatchurst) Sanford; a sailor-turned-shopkeeper, he also served as an ensign in the Newport militia. He married Lydia Odlin on the 8th of February, 1722.
Joseph is understood to have died at Newport in the fall of 1765; his burial was recorded at the town's Common Burying Ground. Lydia survived him by more than fifteen years, dying in May of 1781; she lies in the same cemetery.
