Joseph was a justice in Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island and the following letter, at the time of the publication of the Stanton source in the possession of Dr. George D. Stanton of Stonington, provides so me information of the times:
Addressing Governor Craneston of Newport, Rhode Island:
" WESTERLY August the 28 day 1719
Honnored Sur these with grief com to Inform your Honner that yester day Robert babcock of this town departed this live and it Is to be feared that the caus of his deth came by abuse or hurt that he Reseved: Sur the Jury of Inquest have sat on him and viewed the ontward and Inward part of his body and they find his body brused and his blader broked.
Sur it is susspected that John Ross of westerly Is the man that hath dun the hurt and commited the fact and I am Informed that he is gon out of this town In a bote of Mr. Christopher Champlins bound for newport the bote hath tow masts the man
hath offen bin att newport and Is known there:
Sur I nede not Instruct your Honnor butt hope that If he be at newport you In your wisdom will take Care that the said Ross be seccurred: Sur I humbly pray your advice Consarning the premeses and whather the Evidencers ought to be bound over to Cort before the Ross be Taken: no more att presant but Remain

Joseph died without a will and his estate was divided among his thr ee sons and four daughters living at the time.

John studied at Harvard. In 1664 he became the first Recorder of Stonington and married Hannah Thompson. He was a Capt. of one of the four Conn. Regiments in King Phillips War and credited with the capture of Canochet, the Chief Sachem of the Narragansetts. Before his death, he gave son Joseph the homestead farm in Stonington, and sons John and Thomas all the land in Preston,CT. I found his gravesite in 1995 and have NO picture. [Thank you, Brian, for adding the photo of the new tombstone.] Capt. John's married Hannah Thompson in 1664. She is linked here BUT has no known gravesite. They had 6 children.
Son John, Memorial# 24503583, and and his wife Mary Starkweather are buried in Griswold.
