Businessman. He grew up in Camden, New Jersey, and attended the city's public schools. In 1881, he started a furniture company at the corner of Delaware Avenue and Federal Street. The company grew to ship both nationally and internationally. On June 9, 1892 he married Florence Groff Kelly at the First Baptist Church in Camden. The couple had four children, and lived in Chestnut Hill.
