Controversy about Susannah Wilbore's Maiden Name

It seems certain that her maiden name was Harris, which is what was recorded in Vital Records of Bridgewater, Massachusetts and in The Wilbores of America. However records in Surry give her maiden name as Leonard, which is likely an error. See link below for a discussion.

They were Taunton men who petitioned the General Court of Massachusetts for incorporation as a new town on the western bank of the Connecticut, under the name of Township No. One, orNew Taunton. Their territory was few miles south of what is known as Bellows Falls. Among the petitioners were Capt. Joseph Tisdale, James Williams, James Leonard, first, second and third, William Hodges, Joseph Wilbore, Ebenezer Dean, and James Walker. They organized the4th of January, 1736, in the Neck 0’ Land school house in Taunton. A few years were given to preliminaries, under the supposition that their town was in Massachusetts; however, in 1641 it was definitely settled that the boundary line between Massachusetts and New Hampshire left them in the latter State. Most of the original partitioners sold out, and their improvements fell into other hands, and their town is now known as Westminster in the Green Mountain State (Vermont), which has the honor of being the oldest settlement on that side of the river, and the New Taunton of 1735.<ref>Pages 159 & 160, History of Taunton, Massachusetts: From Its Settlement to the Present Time; author, SamuelHopkins Emery; published by D. The first list of town officers recorded was at a meeting heldMarch 5, 1775, when Joseph Wilbour was appointed a highway surveyor. On May 9, 1775, Joseph Wilbur was chosen a delegate to the convention which assembled at Exeter on the 17th of the same month. 102 towns were represented by 137 members. Post-officers were established, a committee of supplies for the army and a Committee of Safety were formed, and the provincial records secured, whereupon this conventionadjourned November 16th. On December 12, 1775, Heber Miller was chosen representative to the Provincial Congress, to be held at Exeter on the 21st day of the same month, and Jonathan Cole, Benjamin Peirce,Archelaus Temple, Joseph Wilber, Waitstill Scott, John Cole, and Amos Peirce were chosen a committee to give instructions to therepresentative. For the first time this Congress adopted the name of Colony of New Hampshire. Soon after the Declaration of Independence, the name Colony was dropped and the name “State" substituted.

Notes ==Some say Joseph Wilbur's wife was Susannah Harris not Leonard. Wildbores of America specifies, and MayFlower Society has accepted and provenhis wife to be Susannah Harris daughter of Samuel Harris and Abigail Harding
