About Josephina Skwierawska/Dzwonkowska

"Stevens Point Daily Journal"

3 Dec 1913

Our Oldest Resident

Mrs. Josephine Dzwonkowski had nearly attained the age of 100 years. The death of Mrs. Josephine Dzwonkowski, which took place at the home of her son, Nick Dzwonkowski, at Ellis, in the town of Sharon, last Monday, December 1, unquestionably marked the passing of the oldest resident of the county. She was born in Russia-Poland March 19, 1814, and therefore at the time of her death was aged 99 years, 9 months, and 17 days.

She came to America with her husband in 1859 and direct to Portage county. Coming up the Wolf River to Gill's Landing, the remainder of the journey was made by ox-team, and they were among the pioneer Polish families of this part of the state; in fact theirs was the fifth Polish family to settle in Portage county and Sharon had been the home of the aged lady ever since.

Her husband died about thrity years ago and she is survived by only three of their twelve children. These are Mrs. Jacob Werachowski of this city, Mrs. A.G. Kubisiak of the town of Amherst, and Nick Dzwonkowski, the son at whose home she died, and with whom she had lived since the death of her husband. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Her general health had been quite good until about a year ago, since which time she had been steadily growing weaker and weaker.

She was buried from Sacred Heart Church, in Polonia, this morning, and the remains were borne to their last resting place by six of her grandsons, J.F. Kubisiak, A.J. Kubisiak, Theodore S. Kubisiak, Frank C. Kubisiak, John Werachowski, and John Dzwonkowski.
