Eldest s. of Josiah Gale, Sr. and Elizabeth Chadwick, b. March 20, 1742/3. He m. Dec. 1, 1768 at Worcester, Mass., Elizabeth Rice, dau. of Absalom Rice and Elizabeth Flagg.

Josiah and Elizabeth had several children, but the one of interest to the memorialist is:

• Sarah "Sally" Gale, b. July 21, 1784 at Warwick, Mass., d. Dec. 20, 1866 at Little Osage (Balltown), MO, Æ 83; m. March 22, 1803 prob. at Barre, VT to Rev. Nathaniel Brown Dodge, Jr., b. June 5, 1781 at Winchester, NH. He d. Sept. 3, 1848 at Little Osage (Balltown), MO, Æ 68. They were missionaries to the Osage Indians at Harmony Mission in the Osage Indian Territory, now Bates County, Missouri and at Boudinot Mission to the Osage Indians at present-day Neosho County, Kansas. They had eleven children; the eight oldest were born at Barre, VT prior to missionary service and the three youngest were born in Indian Territory.

Mr. Josiah Gale died Dec'r 8, 1794 Aged 77 years. The sweet remembrance of the just shall flourish while they sleep in dust.

On the day Josiah died he was 76 years old, and Aetatis, (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age, etc.) 77.
