Biography
Josiah Holmes, son of William and Elizabeth Holmes, was born in Scituate, Massachusetts around 1638 and baptized (as an adult) on 27 April 1661.[1]
On 20 March 1666, Josiah married Hannah, daughter of Henry and Ann (Plummer) Samson in Duxbury, Massachusetts. [2] [3]The couple likely resided in Duxbury after their marriage as all of their six children were born there. In 1683, Josiah Holmes was the Constable for the Town of Duxbury.[4]
The Holmes family may have lived in the Marshfield area around 1696 as Josiah was a member of the First Church of Marshfield at that time.[2] Sometime before 1713 the family relocated to Pembroke, as on 13 May 1713, Josiah Holmes of Pembroke deeded land to his son, William [2][5] and to his son, John[2][6] both of Pembroke.
The last record of Josiah is a deed of 25 January 1720/21 where he mentions his son John, late of Pembroke. The deed was acknowledged on 8 May 1721.[2]
The children of Hannah and Josiah Holmes all born in Duxbury were:
Hannah, born October 11, 1667 [2][3]
Dorcas, born August 4, 1669 [2][3]
Josiah, born August 13, 1672 [2][3]
Mary, born November 5, 1674 [2][3]
John, born May 28, 1678 [2][3]
William, born January 18, 1679/80 [2] The printed Duxbury records list this as 1679.[3] but because of the proximity of John's birth in May 1678, it can be determined to be 1679/80.
