Mary, the 3rd daughter of Josiah Holmes and Hannah (Samson) Holmes, was born 5 November 1674 in Duxbury, Plymouth Colony. [1][2][3][4]

Research Notes

Although a number of sources document the birth of Mary Holmes, as with her siblings Dorcus and Josiah, most of these do not provide any additional information following her birth. The Mayflower Society says no further record.[1]

There is a marriage record in the Vital Records of Scituate, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850 for Mary Holmes and Gershom Stetson, 28 November 1707.[5] This marriage is also mentioned in the Descendants of Cornet Robert Stetson of Scituate, Massachusetts and also, the birth of a son, Caleb in September 1708.[6] Subsequent records list the death of Mary the wife of Gershum in Scituate, 9 Sep 1708, his remarriage to Anne King Jan 29 1712/3 and his death 1754 in his 77th year.[6][7]

At this time, it is uncertain if this is the same Mary Holmes; although the couple are of a similar age and there do not appear to be any other single Mary Holmes. Additionally, there is no record of Caleb's birth in The Vital Records of Scituate. Her early death and possible lack of children born to the couple (none recorded in Scituate) would explain why she didn't have any deeds from her father. More research required.
