Biography

Hannah Holmes was born the 11th of October, 1667, at Duxbury, Plymouth Colony, the daughter of Josiah & Hannah Samson Holmes. (Vital Records of Duxbury, MA, thru 1850, vol. 1, pg. 92.)

Hannah's husband was Thomas Lambert Jr. There is no known marriage record, but the marriage probably occurred circa 1690, in Plymouth Colony. Please note: Her name is not found in any known record other than her birth record. Her relationship with Thomas is derived from deeds & deduction. She was never known as "Anna".

They had a son, Thomas Lambert 3rd, born circa 1691. This is known by a 1713 deed, in which Josiah Holmes, Hannah's father, sells to Thomas 3rd ("junr", in the deed) land that will return to Josiah or his heirs, if Thomas 3rd does not have children. (Plymouth County Deeds, vol. 10, pg. 546) In order to engage in buying land, Thomas 3rd would have had to be at least 21 years old, the age of majority in that era, making a birth of 1692 or earlier. Also, Thomas Lambert Jr. had married as a second wife, Joanna Torrey in 1709, after Hannah Holmes had died. (Vital Records of Scituate, MA, thru 1850, vol. 2, pg. 175) Why would Josiah have waited until 1713? .... likely because he was waiting for Thomas to reach his 21st year. In a 1717 deed Thomas 3rd then sells a piece of this land to his "Uncle John Holmes", that was "sold me by my Grandfather Josiah Holmes". (Plymouth County Deeds, Vol. 14, pg. 18.)

It has been stated by other researchers that Hannah Holmes married John Lambert, Thomas' brother. The Mayflower Silver books have also stated that there was confusion over which brother she married. However, there is good evidence that John Lambert married Hannah Bates. Please see their profiles for links. Since it's at least possible, although remote, that Thomas Lambert 3rd, being called "junr" in the 1713 deed, was not because he was a son of Thomas, but because he was the "younger" Thomas, it's critical to look at all the pieces of evidence.

- John Lambert's first four children are recorded in Scituate records, starting with John in Dec., 1693. Why wasn't a Thomas included in this family register? This Thomas could not have been born later, as he would not have been 21 years old at the time of the 1713 deed. (Town Records of Scituate, MA, vol. 6, pg. 73.)

- Josiah Holmes has no other deed contact with the children of John Lambert &, presumably, he makes this arrangement with Thomas 3rd at least four years after Hannah has died & Thomas Jr. has married Joanna Torrey.

- Lastly, John Lambert is involved with multiple deeds with the Bates family in Scituate. In various deeds, it's clear that his land borders theirs. In this era, it was common that land was sold within the family & if John Lambert married Hannah Bates, then he would be considered family.

Hannah Holmes Lambert's death date is unknown, but she clearly died before May, 1709, when Thomas married Joanna Torrey.
