Funeral services for Tulsa oil man and philanthropist Julius C. Livingston were held today in Temple Israel. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery with Fitzgerald Funeral Home in charge. Livingston, 93, died Saturday in a Tulsa nursing home. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Livingston Moved to Tulsa with his family in 1909. He was a 1914 Central High School graduate. His family formed an oil supply business, Producers Supply Co., shortly after arriving in Tulsa. The Livingstons opened their home to serve as an Orthodox Jewish synagogue. The first Orthodox Jewish marriage in Tulsa occurred there. Livingston once said his philanthropic interests should be seen in the light of his Jewish faith and upbringing. He said he was reared with the belief that "charity begins with birth and ends with death." He said he got lessons in charity from his parents. "I would ride with my father in a one-horse surrey through Tulsa as he collected money from owners of stores and businesses for charities," he said. Livingston joined the U.S. Naval Air Corps in 1917. He and a brother, David, founded Mazda Oil Corp. in 1922. Julius Livingston was the firm's president until it was sold in 1952. He founded Livingston Oil Co. in 1955 and retired in 1966. Livingston was a lifelong member of Congregation B'nai Emunah and Temple Israel, serving on the boards of both for many years. He was a founder and past president of the Tulsa Jewish Community Council. He was a fellow of Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., where he established a library for social science. He was a friend of Israeli pioneer leaders Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir. In 1983, the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev named its Ben-Gurion library and building at Sdeh-Boker in honor of Livingston and his wife, Gertrude. He received the Herbert Lehman Israel Award in 1964, the B'nai B'rith humanitarianism award in 1968 and Sertoma International "Service to Mankind Award" in 1967. He was a supporter of the YMCA, Red Cross, Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, the United Way, U.S. Jaycees, International Petroleum Exposition, Hillcrest Medical Center, the Tulsa Recreation Center for the Physically Limited and the Salvation Army. Also surviving are two sons, Alan N. Livingston of Houston and David M. Livingston of Tiburon, Calif., and two grandchildren.
