Captain Gerrit Reinier Botha, an older brother of Commandant-General Louis Botha was born on 20 September 1858 in Greytown, Natal. He later moved to the Vrijheid district (Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) and took part in the battles of Dundee, Modderspruit, Colenso, Pietershoogte and Willow Grange and also the attack on Vryheid and the fighting at Bloedrivier, Ithala and others. He spend most of the war attached to the Commando of General Emmett. He did very valuable work as Captain of a scouting corps that bore his name.
