Catherine (White) Leggatt was the daughter of Alexander White. She married Pilgrim John Carver by 1609 and they came to Plymouth together on the MAYFLOWER in 1620. (In his account of the passengers on the Mayflower in 1620, Bradford records as the first family "Mr. John Carver, Katherine his wife,...") She died in Plymouth about five or six weeks after her husband, so in late May or early June 1621. (The identification of the wife of John Carver derives from the following evidence: Alexander White in his will of 15 March 1594 named daughters Catherine, Bridget, Jane and Francis (all apparently unmarried); Eleanor White, widow of Alexander White, in her will of 7 April 1599 named "my son Leggatt and his wife" and "their daughter Marie," along with daughters Bridget, Janie and Frances (still apparently unmarried); Bridget White married in 1604 Rev. John Robinson; and in a latter of 14 June 1620 [NS] John Robinson addressed John Carver as "My dear friend and brother, whom with yours I always remember in my best affection." Insofar as this identification rests on the letter from Robinson there may be some doubt, inasmuch as Robinson addresses others as brother, so this may reflect only a church relationship.) There are no recorded children fronm this marriage. (Dexter published burials of two children at St. Pancras in Leiden, Holland, as children of John Carver, but Dexter misread these burial records which pertain to other families.)

The wife of John Carver, the first governor of Plymouth Colony. Katherine was a prominent woman in the English Separatist church in Leiden, and it was not until their marriage that John Carver became a member of the separatists. It is not certain when they were married, but the records state that Katherine Carver witnessed the betrothal of Roger Chandler and Isabella Chilton on 22 May 1615, so it must have taken place sometime before May 1615. Katherine's father was Alexander White of Sturton-le-Steeple, Nottinghamshire. Her siblings were also active members of the church. Her sister Bridget was married to the Leiden congregation's pastor John Robinson. Her sister Jane was married to Randall Thickens, sister Frances was married to Francis Jessop, and her brother Roger White was also married to a prominent church member. Katherine and John Carver had no surviving children. They are known to have had one children, but it died in infancy on 11 November 1617. Both John and Katherine died the spring of 1621 having left behind no descendants.
