Ava Lowle Willing was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Edward Shippen Willing (1822-1906) and his wife, the former Alice Barton. She had two siblings, Susan Ridgway Willing (Mrs. Francis Cooper Lawrance, Jr.) and John Rhea Barton Willing.
