Lammert Lammertz, on May 17, 1674 in the service of the Dutch East India Company

Note: As surnames were not fully established at that time, Lammert/Lambert was only known by his patronym (Lammertsz = Lammerts zoon = son of Lammert), with variations in spelling such as Lambert. The fact that they gave their sons the surname Meijburg is indicative of the fact that his family name was probably this, but as yet no baptism or other record has been found to verify this. The name and spelling as written on the baptism of their second son, and first child born in the Cape, has been adopted, with the other variations given as aliases.

The following summary includes work done by P.A. Myburgh (Philippus Albertus Myburgh) in his book Die Myburghs van Suid-Afrika, 1st & 2nd ed. (hereafter referred to as MSA) as well as from websites mentioned below.

According to an article written by PA Myburgh in the journal Familia, 1969, no.1, the land transaction mentioned below refers to "Lambert Lambertz van Broekemeer". Broekemeer. Broekemeer was the name of the lake area around Broek, a small northern Netherlands town near Amsterdam, now Broek in Waterland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broek_in_Waterland), built on reclaimed land which was settled before 1400. It is not far from the historic town of Purmerend (home town of Aaltje), both of which are now part of the Waterland region (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterland_(regio)).
The article (as reproduced below from the Hanekom site) goes on to say, "It is remarkable that in the first fifty years of settlement [at the Cape] there is only one other free burgher from Broek, viz. the arquebusier on the ship Dordrecht, Willem Schalk van der Merwe, father of the Myburgh SM, Elsje van der Merwe." It also suggests that they probably left from the harbour of Buiksloot (https://goo.gl/maps/NUbmATFpJkM2 now reclaimed land in north Amsterdam), which is recorded as the birthplace of first son Jan, and baptism records from the Buiksloot church have been found for both Jan and a second son, Albert, who must have died young.
MSA 2nd ed. says that he was a farmer in Holland and became a military captain with the VOC in the Cape from 1667. So their departure date can be estimated to be about 1665-7, after the birth of first son Jan. According to the Stamouers entry (see below) by Freek Myburgh, one of the Myburgh board members owns the Lambert Lambertz Jacket which he wore during his office as a captain of the government (Kompanje), as well as the seal ring, wallet and belt and footbag. This confirms that Lambert was in the employ of the VOC, but it is not clear exactly when he became a "free burgher".
The first mention of Lambert is in a property transaction T128 recorded in the Deeds Office on 26 June 1671, when he bought a house and garden in "Tafelvalley" (Table Valley - the area in front of Table Mountain) from Jacob Rosendael (http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/g7/p7897.htm).
According to the Familia article by PAM mentioned above, "Akteskantoor Tl28 26 Junie 1671: Jacob Rosendaal verkoop aan Lambert Lambertz van Broekemeer ‘n sekere huis en tuin in ,,Tafelvalley” teenaan die tuin van Claas Jacobsen, van Meldorp, en teenoor die huis van Francois Champelaar."
(It was mentioned elsewhere on Geni that this property may have been called Oranjezicht, but there does not appear to be any evidence of this. That property is known for having been in the van Breda family for many generations, starting with Pieter, but this history of the land only goes back as far as 1709: http://www.ozcf.co.za/about/history/ and this site says the first owner, Souillier or Soulli, was a Huguenot: http://mysite.mweb.co.za/residents/jthorpe/GwenFagan.htm.)
The second mention is at the baptism of Albert on 1 May 1672 (estimated 3 years after his birth, based on later records).
The third mention is on a debenture record in the Deeds Office (Akteskantoor 85.5) on 17 August 1672. This showed that he promised to pay Jacob Rosendael (Jacob Cornelis Rosendael, SV/PROG) in the following year, 1673, when the Batavian fleet returned to Table Bay. (This was commonplace in those days for large payments.)
In the 1672 Cape Muster Roll, the couple is listed as “Lambert Lambertsen en Aeltje Alberts”. https://www.eggsa.org/sarecords/index.php/muster-rolls/cape-archive...
In the 1673 Cape Muster Roll, the family is listed as “Lambert Lamberts en Aeltje Hendricks 2 k.” https://www.eggsa.org/sarecords/index.php/muster-rolls/cape-archive...
A record in the Deeds Office dated 11 October 1672 (Akeskantoor - T131) shows that Gerrit Janz “d’Boer” of Wynegom (Gerrit Jansz) lived on the property next to Lambert’s, which he had bought with Olof Bergh (Capt. Oloff Martini Bergh, SV/PROG).
Janz married Lammert’s widow, Aeltje, on 29 October 1673, so Lammert must have died before then.
According to an article on the Colonial Voyage website (http://www.colonialvoyage.com/dutch-south-africa/#): After the departure of Jan van Riebeeck a period of confusion began in the colony: During the first ten years 4 governors were appointed and after this started the war with France.... In 1672 the white population was less than 600 souls, of whom only 64 were male free-burghers... In 1679 the colony had 289 Europeans of whom 142 were free-burghers and 191 slaves.

With thanks to the different tree owners and organisations. eGGSA wensite - STAMOUERS -http://www.stamouers.com/index.php/stamouers/k-to-m/351-myburgh-lam...

Note: He was only ever documented as "Lammert Lammertz" (Lammert, son of Lammert), never with the surname Meijburgh (or any variant thereof). His two sons who survived to adulthood, Jan and Albert, are recorded as having the surnames Meijburgh and Meijburg respectively, and their children each took their forms of the name.
