Background

The VOC fitted out some 4,700 ships, nearly 1,700 in the seventeenth century and a good 3,000 in the eighteenth. Between 1602 and 1700, 317,000 people sailed from Europe on these ships, while between 1700 and 1795 this total reached 655,000.

Although some of it is missing, a huge amount of information is available through various sources about arrivals and departures to and from the Cape of Good Hope by ship. This project seeks to identify and track the sequence of these arrivals and departures in Geni.

Points of departure

The VOC ships departed from a number of different points in the Netherlands. The main departure points found in the Arrivals list below include :

Texel is an island situated on the Wadden Sea, north of Den Helder, northeast of Noorderhaaks, and southwest of Vlieland. The Wadden Sea is shallow inlet of the North Sea between the West Frisian Islands and the northern Netherlands mainland. The inlet extends from Noord-Holland to the northeast, where the islands gradually curve toward the mainland and the channel narrows to a few miles. Before the completion of the IJsselmeer dam (so-called "Afsluitdijk"), the Wadden Sea formed the northern part of the former Zuiderzee giving access to ports like Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Amsterdam etc.

Dutch ships in the roadstead of Texel, 1671 - By Ludolf Bakhuizen

Vlie or Vliestroom is the seaway from the North Sea to the Wadden Sea between the Dutch islands of Vlieland, to its southwest, and Terschelling, to its northeast. The Vlie was the estuary of the river IJssel in medieval times.

Hoorn is in the northwest of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is the largest town and the traditional capital of the region of West Friesland. Hoorn is currently located on the Markermeer, 12 miles east of Alkmaar and 22 miles north of Amsterdam.

Goeree is in the far south of the current province of South Holland, nowadays the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee

Wielingen - the area of wide water leading from the North Sea what is currently Vlissingen

Maas or Maashaven sits on the Rhine–Maas–Scheldt delta of the three rivers of the same name. They are major navigable waterways, offering an entrance from the North Sea to the German and Central European hinterland. Major current ports in the delta are Rotterdam, Vlissingen and ,Antwerp. (The river Maas is known in French as the Meuse).

Delfshaven is a harbour created about 6 miles due south of Rotterdam, to be able to receive seafaring vessels and avoid tolls being levied by the neighbouring and competing city of Rotterdam. This settlement was named Delfshaven ("Port of Delft"). The Dutch East India Company had important wharves and warehouses in Delfshaven

The rise of the Dutch merchant fleet

What did their world feel like when the early settlers left Europe for the Cape?

This section serves to give background and context to the geo-political events ongoing at the time of the Arrivals below.

The celebrated Dutch liberator, William the Silent, led a revolt as sovereign Prince of Orange against the Habsburg overlord, Philip II of Spain and the Spanish government. As the revolt progressed into an independent government and state, the navy was reorganized into a better command structure. In the early part of the list of arrivals below, indeed until 1648, Spain was the enemy. A Dutch States Navy fleet destroyed the main force of a large Spanish fleet still under construction at Gibraltar in 1607. Other activities included blocking the port of Antwerp and the coast of Flanders to prevent the Spanish troops there from getting supplies. The war came to an end in 1648, when the Dutch Republic was recognised by the Spanish Crown as independent; the eight decades of war came at a massive human cost, with an estimated 600,000 to 700,000 victims, of which 350,000 to 400,000 were civilians killed by disease and what would later be considered war crimes.

At the start of the Arrivals list below, the squadrons of the Dutch fleet were reinforced with merchant ships adapted for battle. There was increased demand for ships with more manoeuvrability, speed and crew experience. In 1653, the Dutch government decided to build 60 ships, and ten years later they placed another order for 60 more. The flagship of the Dutch Republic, De Zeven Provinciën, was fitted with 96 guns. For comparison, the British HMS Victory, built more than a century later, had only 8 guns more.

With about 4,000 sailors the Dutch navy was a relatively small employer in peacetime, but in times of war thousands more were hired. Flag officers and captains were themselves responsible for hiring the ship's crew. Usually a ship's crew were hired for only one campaign, excluding the officers. Since the early 17th century, experienced captains were employed for long periods of time by the Dutch navy; they were responsible for the ships provisions, and when they bought supplies for less money than the government provided they could keep the rest, and a smart captain could make a small fortune this way in peacetime. In 1665, regiments of soldiers were deployed aboard the ships. These soldiers would later become famous and feared Dutch marines.

By the time Jan van Riebeeck left for the Cape in the middle of the 17th century, the Dutch navy was the most powerful navy in the world.

During the 17th century the Dutch Republic was involved in many wars, many of them at sea. The main goal of the Dutch navy was to protect shipping lanes all over the world and, if need be, to repel a naval invasion of Dutch territory. In the course of the first 100 years of the list below, Dutch wealth and maritime expansion was the source of much envy across Europe, but most especially in England. The English Parliament passed the anti-Dutch Navigation Ordinance in 1651 leading to increased tensions.

When Jan van Riebeeck set sail for the Cape the First Anglo-Dutch War of 1652-1654 was in full swing. The English fleet concentrated on capturing the Dutch merchant fleet, which would prove vital to their commercial success. An example of this is the Battle of Dungeness in December 1652, in which Maarten Tromp was able to keep the Channel open for Dutch trade.

In the Second Anglo-Dutch War 1665-1667 five major battles took place, nearly all of them in English waters. Between March 4th, 1665 and July 31st, 1667, England fought the Dutch Republic over control of trade routes and their colonies in Africa and North America. The monarchy had been restored in 1660 and Charles II, egged on by various advisers who hoped to profit handsomely from war, became eager to carve off a piece of that Dutch naval dominance for his new kingdom. It was during this period that the Raid on the Medway (1667) took place, the worst naval defeat in English history. To add a bit more seasoning to the mix, on 16 January 1666, King Louis declared war on England. The Dutch accelerated shipbuilding and built thirty new warships, most carrying up to 72 guns, heavier than any available in early 1665. They were supposed to link up with a French naval force in the English Channel, giving them a significant numerical advantage. However, most of the French ships were based in the Mediterranean Sea, and despite leaving Toulon in April, delays meant they failed to arrive in time! (One contemporary diplomat suggested the relatively new and inexperienced French navy did so deliberately, being "dismayed by the difficulties of the enterprise"). The impact on trade of the war was clear to see. During this time only 35 voyages to the Indies were completed by the VOC. Compare this with for example, the period 1660- 1662 where almost 100 voyages took place (not all of them stopping at the Cape). Subtracting voyage numbers in the arrivals list below gives a reasonable yardstick for the number of VOC voyages per year). The Dutch also suffered a significant economic loss when up to 150 Dutch merchantmen sheltering in the Vlie estuary were destroyed in an action known as Holmes's Bonfire. Talking about fire, it is worth reminding ourselves that during this time in the eighteen months from 1665 to 1666, the Great Plague of London killed more than a quarter of its population. On top of that in September 1666, the Fire of London destroyed much of the city, causing huge economic damage, and turned public opinion against the war.

The Third Anglo-Dutch war kicked off on 27 March 1672, and concluded on 19 February 1674. A naval conflict against the Dutch of an alliance between France, England, Cologne and Münster to attack the Netherlands and end the dominance of the Dutch Republic over the seas. The Year of Disaster is the name the Dutch still give to the year 1672. The Netherlands were attacked on land and at sea. Michiel de Ruyter managed to inflict a number of heavy losses on the Anglo-French fleet and was able to prevent an invasion from the sea. On land, events took a less favourable course for the Dutch. A 120,000-strong French army marched on Cologne and invaded the Republic via the Rhine. At the same time, the bishop of Munster and his troops crossed the border in the eastern province of Overijssel. William III was appointed stadholder and Johan de Witt resigned as Grand Pensionary. The popular fury showed itself in the gruesome lynching that was to cost the life of both Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis.

The Second Treaty of Westminster ended the war. England acquired the right of first salute and received an indemnification of a million English pounds. However, William III had succeeded in breaking up the Anglo-French alliance, which had been so dangerous for the Netherlands. New Amsterdam, which the Dutch had managed to reconquer in 1673 and had now baptized Nieuw-Oranje (New Orange), was handed over to the English for good, but the Dutch retained Surinam. The stage was set for the ascension of William and Mary to the English throne in the Glorious Revolution in 1688.

  • Officially the name was Nieuw Haarlem, but usually only referred to as Haarlem in official documents of the VOC.
  • The Haarlem sailed from Batavia on 16-01-1647 with 120 on board as part of the second return fleet (5346-5348) under command of vice-commandeur Reinier van 't Zuim aboard the WITTE OLIFANT.
  • Under Ships Master Pieter Pertz. the Haarlem ran aground and sank during a storm on March 25, 1647 in Table Bay, between Robben Island and the mainland.
  • The stranded crew built a temporary fort, grew vegetables in the fertile soil, and made contact with the local Khoikhoi.
  • After the survivors were picked up the following year, the Heeren XVII of the VOC asked two merchants, Leendert Jansz and Mathys Proot, to write a report on their experiences at the Cape.
  • The Remonstrantie that they submitted in 1649 contained recommendations that impressed the Amsterdam Chamber of the VOC.
  • At the time there was increasing tension between the Netherlands and England, and they saw the far-flung Cape Peninsula on the sea route to the Indies as a practical, healthy and strategic area to take ownership of.
  • The Heeren XVII approved their proposal to establish a meeting place and fortress at the Cape.

  • Jan van Riebeek on board.
  • Van Riebeeck was recalled from the post in Tongking by the Dutch authorities when it was discovered that he was conducting trade for his own account.
  • On his voyage back from and Indochina, the ship stopped for 18 days and sheltered in Table Bay. While there, van Riebeeck realized that the area could supply passing ships with fresh produce; he began to advocate a refreshment station on his return to the Netherlands.
  • His observations were not unique.
  • Various ship's officers were recommending that the Dutch East India Company establish a way station for the arduous voyage from Europe to the East Indies to allow ships to take on fresh water, fresh food, offload the sick, and to make repairs to ships.
  • Death rates from scurvy could impact as much as 40 percent of the crew on long voyages.
  • The causes and cure of scurvy wouldn't be well-understood for another one hundred years. It was well known in the mid-seventeenth century that sufferers usually recovered quickly on land.

At the Council meeting of 8 May 1658 it was minuted that the Hasselt had anchored two days earlier with 228 slave men and women on board. Of this group 43 slaves who were all traded at Popo (earlier called Arder, now known as Lagos ) died during the voyage.
  • The Council decided that the Hasselt should set sail for Batavia “en daarmee af te senden een getal van 140 a 150 stucx slaven” [and to send between 140 and 150 slaves (to Batavia )].
  • At the meeting of 30 May 1658 it was noted that the Company had to feed 200 slaves per day. On 28 August 1658 the Councilors learnt about the slaves from Guinea and Angola who had absconded. At the Council meeting of 26 October 1678 it was recorded that the slaves traded on Madagascar would be transported immediately to the west coast of Sumatra . This type of reporting occurs throughout the Resolutions up to the end of the VOC rule at the Cape of Good Hope.

  • "Noord Beverland" sailed from the island of Texel on Christmas Day 1766 on its way to Colombo in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). After an arduous voyage, in which 27 died at sea, the "Noord Beverland" arrived in Cape Town on 23 March 1767 with 54 sick members in its complement. The sick having been landed for treatment and the ship replenished, it sailed for Ceylon on 9 April arriving at Colombo on 28 June 1767, a further 35 persons having died at sea. Among those put ashore at Table Bay was one "Fredrik Boode van Lunenbourgh" (SFB) who was permitted to remain at the Cape in the service of the VOC after he had recuperated, and was one of the progenitors of the Botha line.

MEERMIN (Mermaid)

Built in 1782 at the VOC yard at Amsterdam for the Chamber of the VOC at Amsterdam. Tonnage 500 ton.

  • Overbeek, Gerard-Ewoud
  • Date of Departure & Port of Departure
    • 1795 - Cape - 8-05-1795
    • on board 40 persons
      • Ultimate Destination Batavia
  • On 18-05-1795 the MEERMIN originally departed from the Cape for the Netherlands in a 16 ship VOC convoy, escorted by two war ships; a day later 8 ships had to return because of adverse wind. When they sailed out again they were intercepted by English ships who had heard the news that France had overrun the Netherlands. The MEERMIN and 6 other VOC ships (including Alblasserdam; Mentor; Dordwijk ) were captured with no loss of life by the English off St. Helena and taken to Shannon in Ireland. Full story of the Meermin’s capture at: [http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6953.] After this, Capt Gerard Overbeek appears to have decided to settle in the Cape for good, marrying Alida Cornelia Brink These were the last days of the VOC, which collapsed into bankruptcy.
