Laura Mae Miller was born in Indian Territory, Chickasaw Nation and lived her early years in Oklahoma before moving to Texas. She married John Reynolds Wheeler on February 6, 1911. They had three children:

James Clinton "Jack" Wheeler (1911-1953) Flora Gladys Wheeler (1915-1999) Bruce Wheeler (1922-1978)

Laura was very young when she lost her husband, Jack in 1936. She lived to be 97 years old and never remarried
