"The Durfee family were from Tiverton, RI In the Summer o
f 1790, Gideon and Edward came first to Farmington, and Gid
eon returned in the fall representing the country so favora
bly, that the whole family resolved upon emigration. Gideo
n with Isaac Springer, came back in the winter of 1790 an
d 91 with an ox sled, consuming 17 1/2 days in the journey
. Gideon purchased of John Swift his choice of 1,600 acres
. He located it on what was long known as "Durfee street
" a short distance below Palmyra, securing a large amount o
f the flats on the Ganargeva; Being soon rejoined by his br
other Edward, the brother and Springer built a cabin and cl
earing six acres, and without the use of a plough, plante
d it to corn.

isit of Humphrey Sherman "To the Durfees in their forest ho
me in 1791, in company with Isaac Springer, who was at tha
t time 17 years old;"

Mr. Durfee, with his brother Edward, came from Tiverton, R.
I. to Famignton, N.Y. in the summer of 1790. He returned wi
th a favorable report of this country, and came back the fo
llowing winter with Isaac Springer.
