GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES FROM THE VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY, Vol. V, 1981, "The Townleys and Warners of Virginia and Their English Connecitons", by Mary Burton Derrickson McCurdy: (THE VISITATION OF THE COUNT PALATINE OF LANCASHIRE MADE IN THE YEAR 1664/5 BY SIR WILLIAM DUGDALE, KNIGHT, edited by the Rev. F. R. Raines) ... Laurence Townley, son of Laurence Townley and Mary [actually Margaret],dau. of Mr. John Hartley of Stonehedge, married Jennet, dau. of Mr. John Halsted of Windlehouse. ... Lawrence, second master of Stone Edge, was already married Jennet Halstead at the time of his father's death [January 5-19, 1597/8]. ... In all the baptismal records of Lawrence townley's children he is of Stone Edge, except in the case of the earliest, Alice [12 Feb 1603/4], where he is "of Fulshay, gentleman." (fulshay or Fulshaw is virtually at Stone Edge and was a part of the Townley holdings.) ... Was Lawrence Townley temporarily of Windlehouse? At court July 9, 1624, he is referred to as one of the commissioners dividing fifteen acres of commons called "Limestone Scarrs" in Briercliffe (where Windlehouse is) among freeholders and copyholders. (Farrar, COURT ROLLS OF HONOR OF CLITHEROE, II, 418). But on April 11, 1635, he is referred to as Mr. Lawrence Townley of Stone Edge in the assignment of two pews to him and his tenants in the Colne parish church. (Certifcate of the Bishop of Chester's Committee, Lancashire Record Ofice, DDB 80/88.) He was buried at Colne February 12, 1654/5, an old man. No will is on record, nor would there have been much occasion for one, with his daughters all married and his one son the inevitable heir under English law.
