About Lieutenant The Hon. Edward Wyndham "Bim" Tennant
Edward Tennant
- Born on 1 July 1897
- Son of Edward Tennant, who became Lord Glenconner in 1911, and Pamela Wyndham, a writer.
- Nicknamed ‘Bim’,
- Educated at Winchester College until the age of 17, when it was decided he would lodge with a family in Germany to learn the language, in preparation for the Diplomatic Service.
- When war broke out he found himself free of school and immediately joined the Grenadier Guards. After a year’s training in London he went to Bovington Camp, Marlow in August 1915 where his company of signallers earned distinction.
- Selected to go out to France, although Brigade Orders had just been issued that no one should leave England before nineteen years of age.
He was killed by a sniper during the Battle of the Somme on 22nd September, 1916.

A wood is being planted in his/Poets' honour, backed by the Woodlands Trust, near Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders - "Poet's Wood" - one of the organisers is Tessa Tennant whose husband is the great nephew of Edward.
