Lionel (73), whose body was found on Saturday by his son, Bruce, and the police in a house in Parys. Bruce Conradie, from Johannesburg, said his father had been alone with his dog in an apartment behind their weekend house. A building contractor was busy with renovation work at the house and Conradie had an eye on the building work.

Insp. Stephen Thakeng, Northern Free State police spokesperson, says a 28-year-old man doing renovation work at the house, on Friday afternoon apparently wanted money from Conradie. Conradie explained to him that his son from Gauteng would bring the money. The worker asked to get his overalls in the house and Conradie opened the door for him. Thakeng says Conradie was then assaulted and hit twice over the head with a hammer. Conradie's head apparently bled profusely and his attacker tried to stop the bleeding with a piece of plastic and a duvet, Conradie and his dog were locked in the house's bathroom.
