About Louis-Joseph Chevrolet

Louis-Joseph Chevrolet was born December 25, 1878 and died June 6, 1941. He was a Swiss-born, of French descent, American race car driver and founder of the Chevrolet Motor Company in 1911. He also founded the Frontenac Motor Corporation in 1916 which made racing parts for Ford Motor Company's Model T.

  • 1895-1899 - Chevrolet worked for Robin mechanics shop
  • 1900 - he moved to New York City and worked for a fellow Swiss immigrant's engineering company, then moved to the Brooklyn operations of the French car manufacturer de Dion Bouton.
  • 1905 - Chevrolet was hired by FIAT as a racing car driver. He also married Suzanne Treyvoux. They had two sons.
  • 1906 - He was employed by a Philadelphia company developing a revolutionary front Wheel drive car.
  • 1906-1909 - Chevrolet drove for Buick and befriended Buick owner William C. Durant, founder of General Motors. He learned car design while working for Buick and started designing his own engine for a new car.
  • 1909 - He raced at Giants Despair Hillclimb.
  • 1909-1911 - Chevrolet built an overhead valved six-cylinder engine in his own machine shop on Grand River Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan.
  • 3 November 1911 - Chevrolet co-founded the Chevrolet Motor Car Company with William C. Durant and investment partners William Little and Dr. Edwin R. Campbell. The company was established in Detroit.
  • 1915 - Chevrolet placed 30th in the Indianapolis 500 automobile race. Durant sold his share in the company over différences in the car's design and started his own company building Chevrolets, eventually selling his Chevrolet stock to take control of General Motors.
  • 1916 - Chevrolet and his brothers Gaston and Arthur founded the Frontenac Motor Corporation to make racing parts for Ford's Model T's. He was also vice president and chief engineer of American Motors Corporation headquartered in Newark New Jersey, unrelated to the more famous American Motors.
  • The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum in Speedway, Indiana features a mémorial at the entrance dedicated to the accomplishments of Louis Chevrolet.

This monument has been established in honor of race car driver and automobile designer Louis Chevrolet. The monument features a large bust of Chevrolet and smaller plaques that feature his brother Gaston, who drove a car Louis designed to victory in the 1920 Indianapolis 500, Henry Ford, W.C. Durant, who made the Chevrolet an integral member of General Motors Corporation and Tommy Milton, who drove a car Louis designed to victory in the 1921 Indianapolis 500. Others depicted in the plaques include Carl Fisher, T.E. Myers, Barney Oldfield, E.V Rickenbacker. James Allison and Harvey Firestone. (bio by: Warrick L. Barrett)
