  • Captain in the service of the Gordon Highlanders. In 1911 he carried Royal Standard of Scotland in place of his father at King George V's Coronation.

He fought in the First World War in 1914, where he was mentioned in despatches.
Lieutenant-Colonel of the 5th Battalion, Black Watch. He succeeded to the title of 10th Earl of Dundee [S., 1660] on 1 February 1914, de jure. He succeeded to the title of 12th Viscount Dudhope [S., 1641] on 1 February 1914, de jure. He was commanding officer of the 5th Battalion, Black Watch (RHR).
