Jacob was the oldest of eight children. Liberally educated in the schools of that day, he was reared on a farm. He was a man of much prominence and influence in his day, in church and state, being a defender of his country during the Revolutionary war, and an elder in the Indian Creek Reformed Church. In 1777, he was elected Lt. Colonel of the first Battalion of Philadelphia county militia. He participated in the battles of Trenton, Germantown, and Brandywine. .
On one occasion he was waylaid by Tories who being numerous and bold, shot him in the leg, tarred and feathered him, tied him to a tree, and commenced digging his grave as they proposed to kill and bury him. Before they could accomplish their deed, help arrived, and he was released. His persecutors escaped, but their property was subsequently confiscated..
------------------------------------------------------- JACOB REED was born in Philadelphia Co., Pa., June 30, 1730, and died in New Britain Township, Bucks Co., Pa., November 2, 1820. On May 6, 1777, he was commissioned Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st Battalion of the Philadelphia County Militia. He saw active service under Gen. Washington, participating in the Battles of Trenton, Germantown, and Brandywine. After three years’ service as Lieutenant-Colonel he was elected Major of the 5th Battalion, Pennsylvania Troops, in which he served until the close of the war. (Pa. Archives, 2d Series, Vol. 13, pp. 589 and 590. Colonial Rec., Vol. 2, pp. 254, 293, and 301. Cert. of Pa. Librarian.)
Pennsylvania land records indicate that a Jacob Reed secured land in West Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, via warrant issued 1 Mar, 1743. The land was not surveyed until 29 May 1752, and patent issued 13 Jun 1754. Jacob Reed later deeded the land to Michael Deaser. Land warrants were only issued to men 18 years of age or older. Land issued to this particular Jacob Reed, and the record of Lieutenant-Colonel Jacob Reed, indicates that there were likely multiple Jacob Reeds living in Pennsylvania during the early to mid-1700s.
