Lt Col Drury STITH, II (from notes in his file on my computer) Judy Canant

Drury STITH appears to have acquired a very considerable amount of land.

21 Nov 1724, "Mr Drury STITH, Jr, has surveyed for him 1,200a on Sappony Cr,.

And again, on 11th Feb, 1725/6, Capt Drury STITH has surveyed for him

including his old land, 3,496a (Prince Geo Co, Book 1, pp 816, 1025). A

Patent soon followed. 13 Oct 1727, there is a patent for 3,596 a on Sappony

Crk, Pr Geo Co, to Drury STITH Jr, of the same Co (VA Land patents, Book 13,

p 192). In this year his wife Elizabeth (Buckner) joins him in a deed. 5th

June 1727, Drury STITH, Jr, of Pr Geo Co, and elizabeth his wife, give to

Henry Harrison of the county of Surry, Gent, a mortgage of 600a on Sappony

Crk, part of a tract on which said Drury lives, and which was conveyed to him

by Robert BOLLING, of Pr Geo Co, Gent. (Pr Geo Co, Book I, p 1027). In 1726,

Drury STITH was a Justice of the Co (ibid. I 940), and also in 1720 (VA

Magazine XX, 90). In 1727, he was still Captain (Chamberlaine's Bristol Par,

p 35); but he was Colonel (or rather Lt Col) before 1735 (ibid, p 83). The

records of Brunswick Co show that he produced his commission as Clerk of the

Co and qualified for the position at a court held 11th of May 1732, and the

same year he was the Co surveyor, holding both positions until his death (Va

Magazine, XIII, 281). He was also interested in copper mining, and Col Wm

Byrd, in his "History of the Dividing Line" (II, 3), gives a humorous account

of Col Drury STITH and his mine. The Brunswick recds show that at a court

held on 6th June 1740, an attachment obtained by Drury STITH, Gent, and

Clement READ "abates by the death of the said Drury," and at this term

Sterling CLACK qualifies as clerk. At a court held 3rd July 1740, letters of

administration on the estate of Drury STITH, Gent, were granted to Drury

STITH, Gent, who entered bond and qualified. Lieut-Col Drury STITH married,

about 1717 Elizabeth, daughter of Maj. William BUCKNER (d 1716) of Yorktown

(Wm & Mary Q, VII, 57). Issue named in this record. (Genealogies of VA

Negroes. Witnessed by Stephen Dewey, George Walton, and Moses

Dunkley. Presented in Court on November 7, 1734. Deeds and

Mortgage Deed dated the 7th day of November, 1734, from Drury

Stith to Robert Bolling, Administrator of the Estate of Drury

Bolling, late of the County of Prince George, dec'd., for 38

pounds, 11 shillings, 9 pence and half penny, secured by 3

Negroes. Witnessed by Stephen Dewey, George Walton, and Moses

Dunkley. Presented in Court on November 7, 1734. Deeds and

Wills Book 1, page 133.

Andrews Parish and Drury Stith, Gentleman, for 20 pounds, conveying 240 acres

on South side of Maherrin River. Witnesses were M. Cadet Young, Willm.

Jones, and Canduis Cargill.

Presented in Court and acknowledged on April 7, 1737. Deeds and Wills Book

1, page 313.

Indenture made the 7th day of June, 1738, between Thomas Loyd, Sr., of St.

Andrews Parish and Drury Stith, Gentleman, for 50 pounds, conveying 283 acres

on lower side of Sturgeon Run on the South side of Nottoway River. Witnesses

were James Parrish and M. Cadet Young. Presented in Court and acknowledged

on June 7, 1739. Deed Book 1, page 526.

Indenture made the 2nd day of August, 1739, between Thomas Couch, Sr., Thomas

Couch, Jr., and Drury Stith, Gentleman, for 30 pounds, conveying 566 acres on

the Pine Lick Branch (John Stroud's corner, Thomas Lloyd's line, Talbott's

line, Morris's corner), same being granted to the said Thomas Couch, Sr., by

Letters of Patent at Williamsburgh, 1720. Witnesses were M. Cadet Young and

William Edwards. Presented in Court and acknowledged on August 2, 1739.

STITH, JR, of said Co, 892a of land on NS of Sappony Crk, the consideration

being 5 shillings and "the natural affection he bare unto the said STITH."

(Pr Geo Co Book 1, p 557) This expression implies close relationship and is a

valuable bit of evidence.

Planter, and Drury Stith, Gent., conveying 196 acres on both sides of

Sturgeon Run and 392 acres which was surveyed for John Stroud, dec'd. in

1729, to secure payment of 12 pounds, 12 shillings and 2 pence. Witnesses

my Aunt, Mrs Thomas J Stith, (my mother's oldest sister, formerly Hannah

Williams) who showed me two old Bibles from which I copied the following

records. In William and Mary Quarterly, Second Series, Vol 6, no. 2, April

1926, printed at Williamsburg, Virginia may be found the record which I sent

Article XLIV, on Brunswick County and St. Andrew's Parish.

At a vestry-meeting in 1755 the following entry is found:

"The vestry, being of opinion that the Rev. George Purdie has for some time

past neglected his duty, and behaved himself in a manner which is a scandal

to a person of his function, do order and direct Drury STITH, Edward

Goodrich, and Littleton Tazwell, or any two of them, to wait on the

Commissary and acquaint him as soon as possible with the behaviour and

conduct of said Purdie for some time past, and request him to make use of his

authority in silencing him, (if any such he hath,) and if not, that he will

join with us in a remonstrance to the Bishop of London, or such other person

or persons as he shall advise, to have the said Purdie removed from the

parish."
