Obituary for LT Simon Davis:

Simon Davis, the eldest son of Dolor Davis and Margery Willard was born in "New Towne" Plymouth Colony (present day Cambridge, Middesex County, Massachusetts) in 1636.

Mary Blood, the daughter of James and Eleanor (Harrison) Blood was born in Concord, Massachusetts on July 12, 1640. They were married on December 12, 1660 in Concord, and settled there on a farm given to him by his father, situated near his father's homestead.

In 1675 he was appointed command of the troops defending the garrison at Brookfield, Massachusetts; Captain Wheeler having been wounded. Battle of Brookfield was a part of the King Phillips War 1675-1677. He received his commission as lieutenant, July 2, 1689. He was admitted a freeman, March 21, 1699.

In the publication "A History of the Town of Concord, Middesex County, Massachusetts" he appears as Constable Simon Davis on March 31,1680. In 1689, 1690, 1692 and 1705 his name also appears under the heading of Deputies and Representatives from the first Settlement of the Town.

Simon and Mary had seven children, all born in Concord, Massachusetts as follows:

  1. Simon Jr, born 12 OCT 1661 settled in Concord and was one of the distinguished physicians of his day. Dr. Davis married Elizabeth Woodhouse on 14 FEB 1680. They had eight children.
  2. Mary, born 3 OCT 1663. Married Deliverance Wheeler of Stow on 28 MAY 1691 where they settled.
  3. Sarah, born 11 MAR 1665. Married Thomas Wheeler of Concord on 13 NOV 1695.
  4. James, born 19 JUN 1668. Married Ann Smedley in 1701. James and Ann had eight children. James died 16 September 1727. Ann JUN 1760.
  5. Elener, born 22 OCT 1672. Married Samuel Hunt in Concord on 14 MAY 1669. They had at least one child.
  6. Ebenesar (Ebenezer), born 1 JUN 1676. Married Dinnah Browne on 14 FEB 1700 in Chelmsford, MA. They had seven children. Ebenezer died 31 MAR 1753 in Harvard, MA.
  7. Hannah, born 1 APR 1679. Married Samuel Blood 1 APR 1701 in Concord, MA.

Lieut. Davis settled in Concord; was Deputy 1689, 1690, 1692, and 1705, and held other responsible positions; was in command of the troops after the wounding of Capt. Wheeler at Brookfield, 1675; freeman Mass. Col. March 21, 1689 or 90; died June 14, 1713 at the age of 77; grave-stone now standing in Concord; original will on file at East Cambridge, made June 24, 1710, proved July 3, 1713, and bearing his autograph; a better autograph maybe seen on the Concord records 1689 or 90 attesting election of town clerk. Simon Davis, b. at Concord, Aug. 9, 1683; m. at Stow, Mass., 1719, Dorothy Heald, daughter of Israel Heald by wife Martha. He lived in Stow, and was a blacksmith; d. Sept. 7, 1738, aged 78. His will is on record at East Cambridge, and mentions daughter Dorothy Davis and grandson Joseph Davis. Wid. Martha d. June 14, 1746. "Lieut." Simon Davis lived at Concord until about 1721, when he moved to Worcester County, and settled in Rutland; selectman 1721; innkeeper 1723; waylaid and nearly killed by the Indians in the same year. Petitions with others to the General Court on May 13, 1740, to be set off in a separate township to be named Holden. This request was granted, and Mr. Davis was made moderator of the first town meeting in Holden, May 4, 1745; chairman of board of selectmen for several years; also juryman. He was closely identified with the church. He d. Feb. 21, 1763; wid. Dorothy d. July 21, 1776. Eight children. He was the ancestor of three Massachusetts governors: "Honest" John Davis, John Davis Long, and George D. Robinson. The ancestry of Hon. Horace Davis separates here from my own.
