About Mary Lewis

Wikitree: Mary (Davis) Lewis (bef. 1633-1687)

  • Sources and quoted matter in this profile align with records about her in Plymouth Colony. For these things, this Wikitree profile has much useful information.
  • A sticking point might be making sense of Mary's birth place and date as appearing on Wikitree. One should weigh the merit of it for oneself:—
    • Was this Mary was baptized in Catsfield, Sussex, England on before 2 Feb 1633?
      • Catsfield is 21 miles south of Horsemonden, the birthplace of her mother, so it's not implausible.
    • It's unknown where Dolor was born or where he lived before and after marriage. except maybe county Kent (the county of his wife's birth).
    • There is no 1590s record in all of England in FamilySearch's repository for a baptism of a "Dolor" Davis or Davie.
      • There are between 1,000 and 2,000 indexed baptism records for county Sussex on FS for "Davis" or "Davie" limited to the 1590s. The same it true for county Kent.
      • Notably, FS has no marriage record for Dolor Davis and Margery Willard in its repository in all of England between 1620-1630.
    • The name Dolor in only appears in England's church records (to date) linked to a baptism for Mary "Davie" (FamilySearch Query Results). But this Mary was baptized on 9 May 1631, which differs from the date Wikitree shows in the profile's 16 Jan 2024 update.
      • It's rare to see a male's name be "Dolor" (i.e., melancholy). This easily leads AI hints to connect "Dolor Davie" to a baptism record for a "Mary Davie" in Catsfield, Sussex.
    • As of 7 May 2024, there is no original parish record available for this baptism. There's a transcribed document of the Sussex baptism provided by a typist who used an early-model typewriter. (See Ancestry.com.) Therefore, one can't decipher if the transcription-reading is accurately Davie of it's possibly Davis.
    • Geographically, Catsfield Sussex is nearer the ocean than Horsemonden. Now, if one accepts what Packrat-pro shows as representing the family's ship to Colonial America, the "Elizabeth" sailed out to sea on the Thames from London. London is 67 miles north of Catsfield.

Dolor Davis A Sketch of his life with a Record of his Earlier Descendants By Horace Davis Printed in 1881 Page 37 the Paragraph Starting as " Mary Davis, Daughter of Dolor and Margery, Born in England about 1631;married in Barnstable June 15, 1653, Thomas, son of George Lewis of B.
