About Maj. Gayle Mandis Casebeer

CASEBEER, Maj. Gayle M. (Casey)
US Army Retired
Oct. 4, 1915 - June 27, 2010
Casey passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2010, at the age of 94. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Hildegard, two daughters, Rita (Randy) Lavelock of Brown's Valley, CA, Linda (Bill) Scott of Colorado Springs, CO, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and was preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Tom. He loved spending time with his family, and especially enjoyed traveling and camping all over Europe while stationed in Germany. Casey enjoyed a long and happy life and recently said, "I credit all of this to my family, because my family is my life". In 1939, he joined the California National Guard, was later selected for Officer's Candidate School and commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1943. During WWII, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and the capture of the Remagen Bridge in 1945. Casey remained in Germany after the war where he commanded soldiers guarding high profile prisoners during the infamous Nurnberg War Trials. As a career officer, he was promoted to Captain on his way to Korea, and awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service during the Korean War. During his 22-year Army career, he was stationed with his family in Ft. Knox, Japan, Utah, France and Germany. Casey was promoted to Major while in Germany and retired in 1961, returning to the states in 1965, when the family settled in Sacramento, CA. There he enjoyed a career in real estate until full retirement. Friends are invited to a visitation at Lombard & Company Funeral Directors, 1550 Fulton Ave. on Friday, July 2nd, from 2:00 to 7:00 PM and to the closed casket celebration of his life at the Calvary Cemetery Chapel, 7101 Verner Ave., Sacramento, CA on Saturday, July 3rd, at 11:30 AM.
