John Coggeshall, Jr. (c. 1624 - 1 October 1708)[1][2] was a deputy governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The son of Rhode Island President John Coggeshall, he was raised in the village of Castle Hedingham in northeastern Essex where his father was a merchant.[3] Aged about eight, he sailed from England with his parents and surviving siblings, arriving in New England in 1632. He was first active in civil affairs in 1653 when he became treasurer of the island towns of Portsmouth and Newport. The following year brought the re-unification of the colony, with the island towns rejoining the government with Providence and Warwick, and he served as treasurer of the four towns for a year.[2] His name appears on a list of Newport freemen in 1655, and for the following 35 years he served almost continuously in one or multiple roles including Assistant, General Treasurer, Deputy, General Recorder, and Major for the Island.[2] He was one of ten Assistants named in the Royal Charter of 1663, which would become the basis for Rhode Island's government for nearly two centuries. In 1686 he became the Deputy Governor under Governor Walter Clarke, but his term lasted only a month when the English crown assigned Edmund Andros to be Governor of all the New England colonies under the Dominion of New England. Following the demise of this dominion and the arrest of Andros in 1689, Coggeshall was once again selected as Deputy Governor for the year ending in May 1690, serving under Governor Henry Bull.[2] In April 1676, during King Philip's War, he was on a committee to procure boats for the colony's defense.[2] Later that year, in August, he was a member of a court martial for the trial of several Indians.[2]

Coggeshall had 16 children with three different wives. IN 1647 he married his first wife, Elizabeth Baulston, the daughter of magistrate William Baulston, and this marriage ended in a divorce which was granted by the Assembly in 1655. Elizabeth then married Thomas Gould, and Coggeshall was married later that year to Patience Throckmorton. This marriage produced nine children and lasted until her death in 1676, after which he married a wife named Mary (Hedge) Sturgis, with whom he had four more children.[1][2] Coggeshall wrote a will in June 1708, and died on 1 October of that year.[2]

Have you read :"Betty Baulston and John Coggeshall: An Early RI Divorce" by Robert Charles Anderson and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol CXLIX October 1995? It gives an excellent account of the events leading to the divorce. It appears from this article that John was the good guy, protecting Elizabeth's reputation, which appears to be in need of protection. Maj. John COGGESHALL (168) was born about 1618 in England. He died on 1 Oct 1708 in Newport,Newport,RI. Per C.P. Coggeshall:

John Coggeshall was born in England and came to this country with his parents in 1632. He resided in Newport; his farm, left to him by his father, was situated at the southerly part of Newport. In May 1684 he was appointed Major of the militia, and by which title he was ever afterwards known. He was buried in the family cemetery on his land. The inscription on his gravestone is as follows: "Here lieth the body of John Coggeshall, Major; he died Oct. 1, 1708, in the 90th year of his age." He was three times married, first to Elizabeth, youngest daughter of William Baulston, of Portsmouth, RI, June 17, 1647. William Baulston was one of the original settlers of Portsmouth, he being one of the signers of the compact, Jan. 7, 1638. He was in Boston as early as 1630. On the records of the First Church of Boston is to be found the date of birth of a daughter of Wm. Baulston, 8th mo., 1630.. The married life of John Coggeshall with Elizabeth Baulston seems to be an unhappy one. After having three children born to them, he petitioned to the General Assembly for a divorce [fn 1], which was granted May 25, 1654. In 1655 he was given liberty to contract a new marriage, and the same privilege was granted to her, she marrying Thomas Gould of South Kingstown. The second wife of John Coggeshall was Patience, daughter of John Throckmorton [fn 2] of Providence, R.I., whom he married December, 1655. She died Newport, R.I., Sept. 7, 1676, aged 36 years. Of his third wife, Mary, nothing is known, except the fact that she is so mentioned in his will. [fn 3].

"The governorship of Sir Edmund Andros was overthrown on April 18, 1689. On May 1, 1689, the Rhode Island Assembly met in Newport and ordered that the persons elected in May of 1686 should resume their offices. John Coggeshall resumed the office of Deputy Governor, but Walter Clarke did not resume the office of Governor that he had been elected to in 1686." He held many offices in the colony and was deputy governor, 1686 and 1689-90. He was several times treasurer and general assistant, and one of the petitioners to the new charter granted by Charles II in 1663. In May, 1684, two majors of militia were appointed, John Greene for the mainland and John Coggeshall for the island, hence his title. He was one of the five Rhode Island delegates to the first council held by Governor Andros. At the time of his death, his holdings had increased to five hundred ten acres.
