About Maj. John Pope, CSA

His birth name was John Pope Cocke, he shorted his name to John Pope at the request of his grandfather, Gov. John Pope.∼John Pope Cocke at the request of his grandfather, Governor John Pope (#7781373), and as a condition of Governor Pope's will, he shortened his name to John Pope in 1851. (See Find A Grave, Maj. John Pope #31378267) He served in the Civil War on the staff of General William Hardee (CSA) and after studying law at William & Mary was an attorney in Owensboro, Ky. He owned 474 acres of land located on the Ohio River about 6 miles below Owensboro. He married in 1850, Theresa “Trecy” Ann Smith (1830-79), daughter of Dr. John B. (1800-73) and Mary Palmer Smith (1802-36), of Springfield, Ky. Their ten children were “Mary” Elizabeth Johnson (1851-91); John, Jr. (1852-d.yg.); Katherine (1853-); Rosamond (1854-80); Agnes (1856-1906); Henrietta Theresa (1858-62); John, III (1860); Etta (1861-65); John, IV (1863-75); and Susan Harriett Pope (1866-1906) who married Morgan Gary, of Grayson County, Ky., and they had one child, Eugene McAdams Gary.
Katherine Pope (1853-) married Dr. George Harbin, of Memphis. A son, Walter Harbin, lived in San Antonio.
Agnes Pope (1856-1901) married in 1870, Cyrus Wilson Coy, of Bardstown, Ky. Their seven children were John Pope (-1917) who was an electrical engineer; Vivian Pope who lived in Washington, D.C.; Irene; Joseph Arthur who lived in Cincinnati, married and had one son, John Pope Coy; Dennis (d.yg.); Elizabeth who married Fred Newton Gibbs, of Little Rock; and Anna Rudd Coy who married June Bracy, of Little Rock. Irene Coy married Robert Palmer Cox, of Madisonville, Ky., and had three children, Robert Palmer, Jr., Vernon and Elizabeth Cox.
Major Pope's wife, Theresa Smith, died in 1879 from yellow fever while serving as a nurse and is buried in Memphis Cemetery.
