William DuVal was the son of Samuel and Lucie Claiborne DuVal.
William married Nancy "Anne" Pope on 08 June 1772 in Louisa Co., Virginia.
William as a resident of Henrico Co., VA in May 1775 volunteered for nine days as a private under Col. Patrick Henry in the VA troops for the purpose of taking possession of a gunpowder magazine at Williamburg; two months service from June 1775 as Lieutenant of Capt. Thomas Prosser's VA Company for the purpose of defending Williamburg and the surrounding lower country from British; and five months, 14 days service beginning in the Fall of 1775, as Captain (appointed by the Committee of Safety to raise a battalion of minute men from Henrico Co., VA) in the regiment of Col. Thomas Elliot in the VA State Line for the purpose of defending the eastern part of VA. In Jan. 1781, as a resident of Hanover Co., VA he volunteered and served two weeks as private assisting in repelling Arnold's invasion.
With his wife Nancy they had six children:
