He was elected Captain in the Wilmington Brigade of Militia. He was a second Major Field Officer of Minute Men in 1773. He appears in Harvey’s List of Revolutionary Soldier of North Carolina as well as in North Carolina Colonial Records.

The heritage of John DeVane, Sr. was love of freedom and hatred of tyranny. He was among the first to declare for freedom in America. He was a member of the Provincial Congress which met at Halifax, April 4, 1776, and was elected a member of the Council of Safety on October 15, 1776 for New Hanover county with John Ashe and Sanuel Ashe. These three friends had shown indomitable resistance to the tyrannical acts of England in pre-revolutionary days.

The Provincial Congress in its meeting April 4, 1776 elected John Ashe the Brigadier General of the First North Carolina Militia, or Minute Men, and John DeVane, Sr., 2nd Major.

John DeVane was a member of the Committee of Safety from 1774 through 1776. This Committee was empowered with unlimited authority over property, lives of persons, and affairs of the community. Major DeVane participated in the battle of Moore's Creek, February 27, 1776.

John DeVane and Richard Herring erected a gun factory on Black Creek which manufactured guns and gun powder. They hired the best gunsmiths and other workers to overhaul and repair old guns and muskets. All the products from the factory were used by the Revolutionary soldiers. Tories destroyed the plant during the Revolutionary War.

Major John DeVane was elected a representative to the 2nd assembly of the House of Commons in 1778. Another representative elected at that time was Timothy Bloodworth, who later became the first U. S. Senator from the State of North Carolina. John DeVane serve in the NC Senate during 1779 - 1781.
