  • Gazette Info: Gazette issue 31480. Military Cross; For conspicuous courage and leadership. On September 21st during the attack near Ronssoy on the Hindenburg outpost line, he was placed in command of a company, other than his own, owing to heavy casualties having been sustained. His good leadership under heavy shell and machine-gun fire was undoubtedly the cause of the success of the operation. Although his company was reduced to thirty other ranks, he succeeded in reorganising, consolidating and holding the position gained. During the fighting he was wounded severely in the arm by a shell.
